Tokelau Islands : Solar Powered

Transient

The South Pacific territory of Tokelau has become the first territory to meet all of its electricity needs entirely using solar harnessed energy. The small island nation is comprised of no more than 1,500 inhabitants, the majority sustainable farmers who have been previously dependent on environmentally costly diesel fuel to power the three islands of Atafu, Nukunonu and Fakaofo. This $7million project was funded by the government of New Zealand in hopes to demonstrate to the world how small, remote nations can lead the way in sustainable energy development.
