Vancouver's goal of being the world's greenest city by 2020 is becoming more a realty. The city has recently teamed up with GreenMantra Technologies to produce a more environmentally friendly paving mixture than traditional asphalt. This mixture throws recycled plastic into the mix, which in turn does not look any different than traditional asphalt however does greatly reduces the carbon impact of paving city streets. The recycled plastic allows the asphalt to flow at a lower temperature, meaning up to 20% less fuel is needed to effectively pave roads; this translates to a reduction of about 300 tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year. More so, the plastic mix also causes less vapours to be released into the air during the process. This new 'green' initiative is currently being thoroughly tested before being deployed citywide.
